In situations of water damage, which can be caused by any number of reasons: a burst water pipe, flooding or faulty construction , it’s important to understand that the restoration job is dependent on the extent of the damage.
Many times, the damage to property may require a team or company that specializes only in water damage restoration.
The after effects of water damage can be extensive, and may not be apparent for several days, sometimes weeks after the incident.
Often the situation involves a flooded basement. Basements are known to have moisture problems in general. A flooded basement can be an on going issue, after the event, due to mold (in particular black mold). Black mold is a serious issue because, if allowed to spread, it can be toxic to people and pets through the releasing of spores into the air.
Mold and mildew can become a growing problem if there is carpet that has been damaged from the flooding, as well. Many times it is hard to see the traces of mold and mildew in the carpet. Usually a person can smell it, if it is a problem, and many times it may not be obvious at all. That is why it’s always a good idea to take action against it to prevent such a thing from happening.
The type of water involved in the flooding is a huge factor in the extent and potential hazards involved. If it is from a water pipe burst that is tied into the sewer and the water is discolored, it is most likely a high level health hazard and should be dealt with by a company that specializes in water damage restoration.
Southeastern Steamers does not specialize in full on site water damage restoration, but we can assist in the restoration process.
It is recommended that if the water damage involves fully saturated carpet, that all the carpet and under padding should be completely removed. After removal, the area should be steam cleaned to insure the killing of any mold and bacteria.
The type of steam cleaning involved requires a “dry steam” vapor, which is hot enough to kill the bacteria and mold, but is still dry enough so that it will not cause or irritate a potential moisture issue.
The benefits of using a “dry steam” approach are:
- a much faster drying time and faster completion of the job in general
- there are no toxic or damaging chemicals or cleaning solutions involved
- a deeper “clean” due to the steam’s ability to penetrate the surface involved
Southeastern Steamers determines each water removal restoration call we receive on a case by case basis. However, we are happy to assist other companies or clean up teams, should the project require it or the owner of the property request our services in addition.
